Melisa Van Meter was born the youngest of three children into a military family at Clark Air Force Base, Philippines, on January 29, 1966. Her parents were in the United States Air Force, and she traveled the world going from duty assignment to duty assignment before graduating from Frankfurt American High School in Frankfurt, West Germany. She then graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor's degree in political science and history.
After graduation, Melisa was one of the first Carl Albert Undergraduate Fellows at the University of Oklahoma. She interned as a Cortez A.M. Ewing Fellow in then Senator David Boren's Congressional office in Washington, D.C. before going to law school. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Law with Juris Doctorate in 1991. She has been practicing law in Norman, Oklahoma since August 1991.
Originally, Melisa was part of Ridgeway & Van Meter Law Office, working there until August 1997 when she launched her own office on August 11, 1997. Melisa practiced only in the area of family law, concentrating in matters of children. She found her calling when she performed her first adoption case. After that, she decided to focus her area of practice to adoption and guardianship.
In 2002, Melisa adopted her son, John. She currently resides in Norman, where she enjoys watching her son participate in basketball, baseball and other sporting events, school and church.
